"Awakening from Suffering"
Born a prince in Nepal, Siddhartha lived a sheltered life until he saw the 'Four Sights': an old man, a sick man, a corpse, and an ascetic. Realizing life is suffering, he renounced his throne. After years of extreme fasting failed, he sat under a Bodhi tree and meditated until he attained Enlightenment (Nirvana), becoming the Buddha.
He taught the Four Noble Truths: Life is suffering; suffering comes from desire/attachment; suffering can end; the path to end it is the Eightfold Path. Buddhism teaches compassion, non-violence, and the realization that the 'self' is an illusion.
