Columbian Exchange

"Two Worlds Collide"

1492, The Great Encounter

🔄 Biological Globalization

Christopher Columbus's voyages initiated a massive exchange of plants, animals, and microbes between the Americas (New World) and Afro-Eurasia (Old World). Potatoes and corn fed milliions in Europe and China, while horses and cattle transformed the Americas.

📚 The Great Dying & Growth

The exchange had a dark side. Old World diseases like smallpox killed up to 90% of Indigenous Americans. However, global population boomed due to calorie-rich American crops. Modern cuisines like Italian pasta (tomatoes) or spicy Asian food (chili peppers) are results of this exchange.
