"From Survival to Self-Actualization"
Abraham Maslow proposed a 5-tier model of human needs. At the bottom are Physiological Needs (food, water). Once met, we seek Safety, then Love/Belonging, then Esteem. At the very top is Self-Actualization: achieving one's full potential.
The lower four levels are 'Deficiency Needs'; they arise due to deprivation. The top level is a 'Growth Need'. It doesn't stem from a lack of something, but from a desire to grow as a person. Maslow's theory shifted psychology's focus from treating illness to promoting well-being and personal growth.
